Are Our Schools Killing Our Kids?
Many Airborne Toxic Chemicals Found in Schools Across U.S. are Known Carcinogens

December 15, 2008
- Research shows that early exposure to toxic chemicals can trigger illnesses, serious diseases and even death. These same chemicals are being found in schools across the U.S. And while some scientists spend time and money determining how much of a chemical a child can be exposed to without getting sick, the Indoor Air Quality Experts at AllerAir suggest a much different approach.

"I think it's safe to say that we're beyond debating whether chemicals negatively affect our health, and that children in our schools are especially susceptible to these dangers," said Sam Teitelbaum, President of AllerAir. "Schools need to adopt a more solutions-oriented approach to providing clean indoor air."

The indoor air quality (IAQ) of schools became a hot topic back in 2005 when an elementary school was closed after levels of carcinogens that were 50 times higher than what was considered acceptable were uncovered. A recent study by USA Today found that the air at 435 schools nationwide may be even worse. The EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health.

"Besides the staggering amount of proof that tells us that the IAQ in our schools is deplorable, this chronic situation is further supported by teachers and parents," said Sam. "They are so desperate for a solution that they often invest in a solution out of their own pockets."

AllerAir suggests schools implement a 3-step system in order to establish a healthy learning environment.

Step 1: Educate a school's management, teachers and students about the factors that negatively impact IAQ

Step 2: Be proactive, not reactive; don't wait until you have a serious IAQ problem before you devise a solution

Step 3: Equip your school with an air purification system to ensure superior IAQ

"When people hear 'air purification system' they think 'complicated'. The truth is, it's simple, it's affordable and it's the essential step to ensuring our children's safety in our schools," he said.

AllerAir is an air purification system manufacturer, and has been providing IAQ solutions to homes, businesses and schools around the globe for almost 15 years.
