What are VOCs and what produces VOCs? What are the health effects of VOC exposure?
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are emitted by thousands of commonly used household items. From cleansers and paint to formaldehyde-treated furniture and PVC-encased electronic equipment, most indoor air is permeated with potentially harmful chemical gasses. Some VOCs are odorless; some have a distinct, even pleasant smell.
Exposure to some VOCs can cause irritations to the skin and mucous membranes, gastrointestinal distress, dizziness. VOC exposure can exacerbate respiratory problems such as asthma. One recent study shows a strong correlation between high exposure to chemicals in childhood and developing Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) in adulthood.

The long-term effects of VOCs are still under investigation. Many are known to cause cancer in laboratory animals and are suspected of causing cancer in adults.
